FBI launches Countrywide probe
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating Countrywide Financial Corp. for possible securities fraud, checking whether the company made misrepresentations about its financial state and the condition of its mortgages in its financial filings, according to news reports over the weekend.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the investigation is in the early stages, and that 15 other subprime mortgage companies are also being looked at.
